Filling & Concealing Old Knob Holes

Swapping out your cabinet or drawer knobs? Old screw holes can usually be hidden in one of two ways — choose the right method for your situation:

Wood filler (for small holes or painted finishes)
Best when the hole is small (up to ~6 mm) or you plan to paint over it. Press a quality interior wood filler into the hole, slightly overfilling it. Allow to dry fully — typically 2–4 hours, or as directed on the product — then sand flush. Prime before painting. Safety note: work in a ventilated area and keep filler away from children.

Timber plugs or dowels (for larger holes or natural timber finishes)
The better choice when the surface will be stained or left natural. Tap a matching-timber plug or short dowel into the hole with a small amount of wood glue, trim flush once dry (allow at least 1–2 hours), then sand smooth and refinish to blend. Match the plug timber species to your furniture for the most seamless result.
